About us

CALIOPE is the air quality forecasting system developed by the Earth Sciences Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS). Thanks to the potential in terms of data processing and analysis provided by supercomputing facilities, CALIOPE offers operational air quality forecasts for the Iberian Peninsula, the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, and Europe, too.

Center

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is a high-performance computing institution with multidisciplinary research teams working on Computer, Life, Earth, and Engineering Sciences. The Earth Sciences Department develops and uses global and regional models, data solutions for air quality and climate forecasting, and services for different socioeconomic sectors that help create a more resilient society.

Caliope's mission

Exposure to air pollution has well-known, measurable adverse effects on humans, animals, and the environment. CALIOPE models the atmospheric conditions and provides air quality information to empower citizens, air quality managers, and technical users to take short-term action to protect populations from exposure to air pollution and improve their well-being.
